Our elected officials are spending billions on detaining hardworking immigrants, separating families, arresting people based on their skin color and profession, and sending people to places where they are likely to be tortured. No cruelty is ever okay on the taxpayer’s dime. But what’s even worse is that these harms are happening at the expense of health care, veterans’ benefits, child care, and schools. Taking billions from seniors and families to pay for harm and cruelty doesn’t put Americans first, it puts us last.1
